Culture Open –project’s Accessibility Mapping of the Joensuu City Market Square Stage was the main news in newspaper Karjalainen on October 31, 2019. Project Coordinator Henna Karhapää conducted a mapping of the stage in late-August 2019 and the report detailing the results was published in September.

The report found that the accessibility of the new Market Square Stage had significant shortcomings. On October 23, the Joensuu City Culture- and Sports Committee Board put forward a proposal tothe City Administration that immediate action should be taken to ensure the accessibility of the stage, as per the recommendations laid out in the report.

Newspaper Karjalainen also demonstrated in photographs how people with disabilities have trouble moving on the stage structure. Project Coordinator Karhapää was interviewed for the article and she underlined the significance of consulting people with disabilities when designing new structures and services.
