Improvisation in kantele teaching by Hanna Ryynänen
Teachers from the Republic of Karelia started their online educational course with Hanna Ryynänen from Finland who started her partnership with the Kantele-GO! project last year during the kantele master course in Kuhmo.
Hanna Ryynänen is a kantele-artist, kantele-teacher and a folk musician and composer. Hanna Ryynänen plays all the different kanteles, from 5-string minikantele to 39-string concert kantele, concentrating on the Saarijärvi-kantele in her solo projects.
And yes, it is possible to study kantele online! The new master course is about “Improvisation and composing in kantele teaching”. The first class took place on November 14, 2020 and became a discussion on what the difference between improvising/ improvisation and composing / composition is and how our attitude affects our teaching methods. Once everyone agreed on the terms the new pedagogical tool was offered. Kantele teachers from the Republic of Karelia will work on the folk tune "Mаanitus" as the first step in mastering the method.
The kantele master course is arranged by the Kantele Ensemble, Petrozavodsk, and the Runosong Academy, Kuhmo, within the frame of the Karelia CBC Kantele-GO! project.
