Launch of a culinary studio in Megrega Village

Launch of a culinary studio in Megrega Village (Olonetsky District, Karelia), was a pinnacle event of the international project “Kalitka – the development of cross-border gastronomic tourism” (Karelia ENI CBC), in which the Lead Partner is the Institute of Economics KarRC RAS.

February 24th was a festive launch day for the culinary studio in Megrega – a sociocultural centre meant to become a new attraction in the tourist map of Karelia, and a get-together spot for the villagers.

The studio was opened in an old Karelian house which for a long time functioned as a dorm for a boarding school. It is now given another chance to serve for the benefit of local people, for both tourism and educational purposes (retired people will come to cook together, home economy classes for schoolchildren and Karelian language classes for pre-schoolers will be organized, local NGOs will meet here).

The interior revives the traditional Karelian atmosphere by means of authentic pieces received as gifts from locals – old decorative and art pieces, furniture, utensils.

Tourists visiting the Megrega culinary studio will be offered local specialties, including authentic Karelian kalitka pies just out of the oven.

Other important outcomes of the project are the Gourmet Taste of Karelia gastronomic route, and a gastronomic map with catering points marked on it, where you can taste local cuisine. It is available for free in a downloadable mobile application. The culinary studio in Megrega is now yet another bright spot on the map.
