Submitted by KA10010 on 09.11.2020 - 10.22

Due the covid-19 pandemia, the first seminar of Project TohmaKoita was held 2nd November 2020 online. Participants were from several towns as well from Russia as from Finland. All the participants are working on the partner organisations of the project – Finnish environment institute (SYKE), Karelvodokanal Ltd. and  ANO Energy Efficiency Centre.  The seminar showed that we have learned a lot from working in a pandemic-constrained environment.

Development Manager Seppo Hellsten from SYKE introduced common principles of Finnish water shield  monitoring. Hellsten explained, that in Finland there is 2858 monitoring stations and 7018 water bodies, which are reported to EU. They are located in eight river basin districts. During last years SYKE has managed to reduce monitoring costs by 20% without reducing the quality or quantity of monitoring.

After DM Hellsten researcher Lari Kaukonen from SYKE told about developed technical and continuous methods, which should be used, if we want to continue the development. According the words of Mr. Kaukonen, there will be four crucial elements in this development. Use of the Internet of Things to collect environmental data. Use of drones to pick up the water samples. Use of drones to measure environmental data.  Use of drones and machine vision to collect data.
