The third educational seminar «Waste management in the villages of Kizhi skerries»

On June, 18 the third educational seminar «Waste management in the villages of Big Klimenetsky Island (Kizhi skerries) » within SUPER project was held.

The seminar was opened by T. V. Pavlova, the Head of Conservation and Monitoring of the Natural Heritage Department of Kizhi Open Air Museum, she told about the SUPER project aims and partners, the special attention was paid to the seminar participants, who, according to Tatyana Vyacheslavovna, are considered to be a kind of «bridges» for the information dissemination.

Y.G. Protasov, the senior environmental engineer of Kizhi Open Air Museum, presented the waste situation on Kizhi Island and highlighted the existing territorial and legislative restrictions for the waste collection and transportation from the villages of Kizhi skerries. Moreover, he told about the Museum call for the tourist to take all their own waste out.

Anastasia Markova, the representative of the Resource centre for the additional education development in the Republic of Karelia, presented useful eco-habits and successful eco-projects in Petrozavodsk city. Thus, the locals learned about the 5 R principles (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot) and the concrete examples of eco-projects (Sbor-mobil, Kompost-mobil, Metal- mobil, Refill, Paper boom and etc.), so the participants were convinced that all the lectures are not just a theory, but a real lifestyle – «Zero waste».

Anastasia Bauer, development director of LLC «YUVI PTZ», introduced the participants to the ways of waste generation reduce. The lecture was held in the dialogue – so, the seminar participants actively offered alternatives to plastic toothbrushes, bottles, bags and household chemicals. The special interest of the locals was paid to the lecture on why the landfills are not the places for organic waste.

Anastasia told about the existing types of composting, existing problems and possible solutions, illustrating the theory with her own examples of home vermicomposter and composting bin in the summer cottage.
