Comprehensive modernization of the water supply system in Sortavala is being completed
A comprehensive modernization of the domestic and drinking water supply system is to be completed in the city of Sortavala this year. Three key facilities were reconstructed: pumping stations of the first and second lifts and a water treatment plant.
Water intake for the needs of residents of the city is carried out from the Hiidenselka Bay of Lake Ladoga, the average daily demand of the city is about 4000 m3.
The pumping stations were built and reconstructed by Karelvodokanal LLC within the framework of the Cross-Border Cooperation Programme Karelia 2014-2020. The city water intake was moved to the deep-water part of the bay, the distance from the shore to the headers is about 500 m, the depth of the water intake is 17 m. Modular automatic pumping stations have been installed, all engineering networks have been overhauled, all facilities are equipped with communication, video surveillance, automation and remote dispatching systems, and are integrated into a single SCADA information system. These measures have significantly improved and stabilized the quality of the source water.
The new water treatment plant was built within the framework of the federal project "Clean Water" of the national project "Housing and Urban Environment". The power reserve is provided – the station is capable of treating up to 8500 m3 of water, which will expand the coverage of centralized water supply. Several stages of water treatment are provided, including filtration of incoming water with self-washing filters using a coagulant (aluminum sulfate), ultraviolet disinfection, as well as water treatment with a solution of sodium hypochlorite.
Also, in the 3rd quarter of 2021, it is planned to carry out a set of measures to close the last two outlets of untreated wastewater into the Lappajarvi Bay in the city center with the installation of automatic sewage pumping stations and the laying of new pressure and gravity water pipelines to direct the wastewater to the city treatment facilities. This will significantly affect the environmental safety of the bay.
The total investment in the engineering infrastructure of water supply and sanitation of Sortavala for 2018-2021 will amount to about 500 million rubles. The planned deadline for completing all measures to modernize water supply and sanitation systems within the framework of the projects being implemented today is the 4th quarter of 2021.
