Benchmarking journey to the German Museums

The Outokumpu Mining Museum’s representatives visited Germany funded by the InterActive History project. The purpose of the trip was to learn exhibition techniques from the large industry-museums. These techniques are to be used in the updating of the Outokumpu Mining Museum’s concentration plant exhibition and by doing so make the concentration process clearer and more interactive for visitors.

Our main destination was the Deutsches Museum in Munich and their mining exhibit. We also visited the DB Museum in Nuremberg and saw their new exhibitions as well as the State Textile- and Industry Museum in Augsburg.

The trip brought many new ideas, but also made us more aware of the problems wear-and-tear of exhibition technology can cause a museum.

The trip was undertaken by museum curator Klas Swanljung and project researcher Arto Hakola. They also met the directorial staff of the museums and presented the InterActive History project to them.
