Training video: making an axe
All-Russian training center for wooden architecture conservation of the Kizhi Open Air Museum together with the “Traektoriya” foundation made a training video “How to make an axe handle and lash an axe head” with English subtitles. Under the guidance of project participant Alexander Lyubimtsev everyone can try to make a good new axe handle of birch wood without using modern power tools, the way they made it in the past. The video is almost uncut and shows the whole process of making an axe handle and lashing an axe head.
The film is the continuation of the cooperation of two project “Ethno-architecture of Fennoscandia in XXI century” and “By Vyajnola roads: ancient arts and technologies of Haukkasaari village”. Last year A team of enthusiasts is rehabilitating the historic village of Gafostrov, where they are reconstructing a number of historic structures including a wooden mill that has been taken from the village and is now in the exposition of the Kizhi museum.
